Anchors in the Concrete
I was walking through the subway station this morning, caught in that familiar tide of people rushing toward their trains. Everyone seemed to be looking at their phones or staring blankly at the floor, moving with a kind of frantic, collective anonymity. Then, I saw a man standing perfectly still near the turnstiles. He wasn’t waiting for a train or checking a watch; he was just standing there, upright and calm, like a lighthouse in a storm. It made me realize how rare it is to see someone who looks like they know exactly where they belong, even when the world around them is spinning in a dozen different directions. We spend so much of our lives trying to blend into the background, to become part of the blur, that we forget the power of simply holding our ground. What does it take to carry your own sense of home with you, even when you are standing in the middle of a crowd that doesn’t know your name?

Jose Juniel Rivera-Negron has taken this beautiful image titled A Sailor Man in the City. It captures that same feeling of quiet dignity amidst the urban rush. Does this image make you feel like an observer or a participant in the city’s movement?
