On the Water Surface by Siew Bee Lim

Captured on a quiet October morning in 2018, this photograph explores the interplay of light and texture following a dawn shower near Beach Road. The photographer focused on a small, elevated pond filled with water lilies, where an internal spotlight illuminated the surface. By isolating the subject, the image transforms the simple presence of a lily into a vibrant abstract study, with the artificial light shifting the colors across the water's surface. This piece is award-worthy for its keen observation of light and the successful transformation of a mundane urban detail into a compelling, painterly composition.

By Owen Callister

The Surface Tension of Memory

When a drop of rain strikes the surface of a pond, it creates a series of concentric ripples that expand outward, momentarily distorting the reflection of the sky before the water settles back into a state of absolute, glass-like dormancy.

The Surface of Things

I remember sitting by a canal in Amsterdam, watching the rain disturb the oily sheen of the water. An old man sat next to me, eating a sandwich wrapped in brown paper.
