The Ancient Symbol of Mother Earth by Kirsten Bruening

Turtles have inhabited the earth for about 220 million years. These unique animals lived on this planet even before the dinosaurs and are considered the oldest symbol in the world. The turtle is the ancient symbol of Mother Earth. The turtle stands for the power of rest and that all in life is giving and taking. I took this photo on a sunny Sunday afternoon when I walked through the botanical garden with my daughter. The turtle stretches her head towards the sun and enjoys the warmth. The closeness to an extraordinary animal and the peace it radiates in this moment had to be captured on a photograph.

This shot was taken in the Alipore zoo, Kolkata, varieties of animals were there but this blue and yellow macaw got my attention. These birds are so beautiful and so big in size also, what a wonderful bird it is, it’s feather its colors were so vibrant that one can never miss an opportunity to watch a beautiful bird like this. At that time one thing strikes in my mind that these birds are not meant to be caged rather than they should fly free in the sky.

On my wife’s birthday we planned a trip to Manali, a hill station which is located in Himachal Pradesh – North India. While moving towards our hotel we discovered a Bird Park on the road side. At one shot she asked driver to stop and got down from car and moved towards the park. Once we entered we saw small cute amazing colorful different shades of birds kept in cage. In each cage there were 2 birds. Only in one cage there were 4 birds. One bird was inside her shelter and other were seeing her. All were talking to each other but were not happy. They were stretching their hands to fly but were unable. This moved me, how such small beautiful creatures are able to express their feeling to each other by ignoring who ever was watching them. This touched me a lot and thought to capture this feeling of their no FREEDOM.

Breed in Africa, central and southern Europe, and southern and eastern Asia, the purple heron is a wide-ranging species of wading bird in the heron family of Ardeidae. They are colonial breeders and build a bulky nest out of dead reeds or sticks close to the water edge, mostly among reeds or in dense vegetation. While visiting Muhuri Dam back in December, 2008, I spotted and photographed this purple heron, which was about to take off.
