I visit New York City every January for business, and I always go to Times Square for the sights and sounds. I enjoy challenging myself to see the same person twice. On this night it was particularly cold so the typical crowds were sparse. No matter the weather there are always tourists being photographed and taking pictures. Several weeks earlier I had received my wide-angle lens, and could not imagine a better location to break it in. A flash is unnecessary for a nice digital SLR because of all the different types of lighting illuminating the area. I took this picture at the top of the red steps looking south toward famous New Year’s ball. The combination of a great camera and solid lens made for a photo which did not need any post processing.

Technical Info: Nikon D5000 with an Tamron SP 10-24mm 1:3.5-4.5G | Exposure: 1/125sec at f/3.5 | ISO: 720 | Focal length: 10mm
Photographer: Darrell Sandefur (West Chester, OH, USA)
As an amateur photographer Darrell Sandefur is most comfortable taking pictures of “things” – architecture, cityscapes, closeup/macro, landscape, and nature photography are his favorites. He prefers to compose his pictures well when taking them with his Nikon D5000 and rely less on post processing with applications.
Darrell almost always brings his camera with him on frequent business travel so he can seize every opportunity to improve his skills. He has not had a photo shoot where he did not learn something. The lenses Darrell mostly uses are his standard issue Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR AF-S, Nikon DX 55-200mm f/4-5.6G AF-S, or Tamron SP 10-24mm 1:3.5-4.5 wide angle.
Sunday morning I drove a few hours from home to visit the Magic Wings Butterfly Garden. While trying to capture a photo a transparent butterfly I came upon this delicate flower a little larger than my thumbnail resting in the shade and on a leaf of one of the bigger trees in the green house. Fortunately I had the time to wait for touch of the sun to come around and awaking its internal soul like it does most of us daily.

Photographer: Thaddeus Miles ( Lowell, Massachusetts USA )
Thaddeus Miles envisions sustainable cities. As Director of Public Safety at MassHousing he works with law enforcement and diverse communities throughout Massachusetts confronting the complexities of crime and trauma. He has a long track record, a strong commitment to empowering people and strengthening youth voice, and vision.

Thaddeus garnered insights and strategies from his international work at Harvard Law School and Community/Urban planning programs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have reinforced his steadfast commitment to ensuring that the most underserved members of our community have genuine opportunities for success and achievement.

He founded the MassIMPACT technology consortium, and co-founded the Neighborhood Network National Consortium. He serves on many nonprofit boards throughout the Commonwealth. His newest partnership “Think Big Dream Big” is a youth driven initiative to jumpstart young people on the journey to a positive future, the fulfillment of their goals, and dreams.

Thaddeus Miles is also an animator and photographer. This led him to become the Board President of Peace* in Focus*: a global non-profit organization that trains youth from underserved and post-conflict communities to be creative peace builders and leaders using photography and grassroots media tools. His immersion in his latest photography projects: “365 a photo a Day in 2012,” and “The African American Church” has strengthened his artistic vision, and illuminated the four pillars of his identity that provide the frame and structure for his photographic journey (Faith/Spirit, Family/Ancestry, Nature/Landscape and People/Community).

Glacier Bay in Alaska is accessible by private boat and cruise ships. The access daily is limited but when you arrive if your lucky on a clear day it is so beautiful. The Margerie glacier is 21 miles long and with global warming concerns is shrinking every minute. I was accompanied with my whole family on the occasion of my parents 50th Anniversary and truly enjoyed photographing Alaska.

Photographer: Steve Hirsch (Columbus,Ohio, USA)
Steve Hirsch grew up with a love of photography, had a darkroom in his basement and photographed throughout high school. He took some time off to get married, raise 3 girls and become an otolaryngologist. Now that the kids have grown he has renewed his interest in his favorite hobby. His other favorite pastime is travel. The two passions go hand-in-hand, travel landscape and wildlife photography. In order to grow as a photographer he has attended workshops in Africa and various locations. He continues to travel all over the world and the United states to capture animals in their natural habitat and photograph beautiful landscapes in all different seasons of the year and various lighting. His artwork adorns the walls of his home, his friends, family and clients homes as well as medical offices. He feels photography is his way to express oneself artistically and connect with people on a very basic level. He enjoys the process of planning and traveling to each unique location, patiently taking the best shot and exploring the best way to display his works of art. He currently lives in Columbus Ohio USA.
Crystal Colorado is basically a ghost town 4 miles from Marble Colorado accessible by hiking and jeep tour. After my wife Sheila and I with our friends Barry and Shelly took this jeep tour to arrive in Crystal we were greeted by this old mill. Built in 1893 as a wooden power house to drive an air compressor for a nearby silver mine this building is now on the US registry of historic places. Well worth the harrowing jeep ride but next time I’ll hike in!

The snowfall in the winter of 2011 was a record in Colorado which led to a massive runoff in the spring. With my wife Sheila and good friends Barry and Shelly, we set out on this climb of 1 1/2 miles up to Hanging Lakes in Glenwood Colorado. A moderately difficult hike with a significant elevation was well worth the effort as these waterfalls were far better in 2011 than in previous years.

Portage Glacier sits about a hours drive south of Anchorage, Alaska. The melting of Portage Glacier created this lake (known as Portage Lake) . This image was taken a few minutes before sunrise to capture the reflections on the mountains on the lake. Icebergs (in the distance in this image) vary in size and are often close and large. To the right of the center mountain, you can see the retreating glacier.

Photographer: Ronnie Glover (Gig Harbor, WA, USA)
Photography took a backseat while Ronnie obtained his college degree. After graduation, he purchased his first camera but was unable to produce the images that he saw in his mind. He then took a few continuing education class to learn the technical aspects of the camera and realized there was so much more to learn about photography. So Ronnie enrolled in the professional program at Southeastern Center for the Arts in Atlanta. The school was operated by Jeanne & Neil Chaput de Saintonge, who currently operate Rocky Mountain School of Photography. He spent 14 years living in Alaska and this gave him unbelievable opportunities to experience nature and capture many images. Ronnie also enjoy travel photography and the experience of different cultures. It is his wish that his images will expose others to the beauty of nature and other cultures. He invites everyone to enjoy his gallery and feel free to contact him with any comments.

I planned this photo shoot 1 hour prior to sunrise beneath the Deerfield Beach pier. Not a person was in sight this time of the morning but shortly before sunrise the fisherman began to arrive at the pier. I could tell the sun was going tho brake through the cloud bank and wanted to capture it. I also wanted to try and get the reflection of the pier if possible. Using a variable ND filter and tripod I was fortunate to capture this exposure. I went back the morning for more it was so much fun.
