Iftar, refers to the evening meal when Muslims break their fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan. Iftar is one of the religious observances of Ramadan and is often done as a community, with people gathering to break their fast together. Iftar is done right after Maghrib (sunset) time. Traditionally, a date is the first thing to be consumed when the fast is broken. Many Muslims believe that feeding someone iftar as a form of charity is very rewarding and that it was practiced by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Hyderabadi Biryani, by Lakshmi Prabhala

Hyderabad is famous for its Dum Biryani. It is a traditional celebration meal made using goat meat and rice, and is the staple of a die-hard Hyderabadi. The Hyderabadi Biryani is so named as it is created in the city of Hyderabad, India. The blending of mughlai and Telangana cuisines in the kitchens of the Nizam (ruler of the historic Hyderabad State), resulted in the creation of Hyderabadi Biryani.

In an effort to experiment with light and reflection, I ended up taking this photo of a Chinese lamp and its reflection on my dining table.

Calm Amidst the Flurry, by Lakshmi Prabhala

It was a dim lit winter morning when we visited Charminar(seen in the background) which is usually surrounded by pigeons as many visitors feed these pigeons. The flutter of the wings on a slow shutter speed does look dramatic, and when you have so many birds. While Hyderabad is a progressive city making rapid strides in the IT sector, there is another side to Hyderabad that is laid-back and unflappable.

We were driving past this home and I couldn’t help but notice the lovely stark colors and the textures. The challenge was to position the elements such that they enhanced the impact that the colors and textures created.
