Glacier Bay in Alaska is accessible by private boat and cruise ships. The access daily is limited but when you arrive if your lucky on a clear day it is so beautiful. The Margerie glacier is 21 miles long and with global warming concerns is shrinking every minute. I was accompanied with my whole family on the occasion of my parents 50th Anniversary and truly enjoyed photographing Alaska.

Photographer: Steve Hirsch (Columbus,Ohio, USA)
Steve Hirsch grew up with a love of photography, had a darkroom in his basement and photographed throughout high school. He took some time off to get married, raise 3 girls and become an otolaryngologist. Now that the kids have grown he has renewed his interest in his favorite hobby. His other favorite pastime is travel. The two passions go hand-in-hand, travel landscape and wildlife photography. In order to grow as a photographer he has attended workshops in Africa and various locations. He continues to travel all over the world and the United states to capture animals in their natural habitat and photograph beautiful landscapes in all different seasons of the year and various lighting. His artwork adorns the walls of his home, his friends, family and clients homes as well as medical offices. He feels photography is his way to express oneself artistically and connect with people on a very basic level. He enjoys the process of planning and traveling to each unique location, patiently taking the best shot and exploring the best way to display his works of art. He currently lives in Columbus Ohio USA.
Portage Glacier sits about a hours drive south of Anchorage, Alaska. The melting of Portage Glacier created this lake (known as Portage Lake) . This image was taken a few minutes before sunrise to capture the reflections on the mountains on the lake. Icebergs (in the distance in this image) vary in size and are often close and large. To the right of the center mountain, you can see the retreating glacier.

This photo was taken from the Parks Highway, the only highway for travel between Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska. Denali National Park sits near the halfway point between the 2 cities and is about a 4-5 hr drive from Anchorage. At 20,320 feet, Mt McKinley is the tallest mountain in North America and towers above the mountain range below it in this image. Many days it is clearly visible from Anchorage 160 miles away. Each summer, climbers flock to Denali National Park to attempt the summit of Mt McKinley.

Before moving to Alaska, the coldest temperature I had experienced was 7 degrees F. Planning to experience the great outdoors but not wanting to become front page news, I decided to take a winter survival course. The course involved 3-4 overnight trips in January-March , spending the night in self built shelters from available materials (aka, snow). This image was made on one of those trips during a break from a group igloo building session. From our location for the night, this image looks down on the peaks and fog below.

The Harding Ice Field trail can be hiked within a day (7 hours) and the trail leads along Exit Glacier to the so-called Harding Ice Field near Seward, Alaska, in the Kenai Fjords National Park. The hike is quite strenuous, but the views over the huge ice field are awarding. Additionally, there is a great chance to see black bears, marmots and mountain goat along the way. The weather was unusually fine and it was definitely worth it, carrying the camera all the way to the top.

Photographer: Karin Eibenberger ( Waidhofen, Austria / Baltimore, MD, USA )
Karin Eibenberger (28) was born and raised in Waidhofen/Ybbs, Lower Austria. She has a Master’s Degree in Scandinavian and German literature and worked as freelance translator, tour and exhibition guide before she started her second career as Biomedical Engineer. Karin currently lives in Baltimore, US, where she works as research associate and Master Student at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

In her private life, she married and has countless hobbies ranging from motorcycling over photography to trekking and backpacking, mountainbiking, traveling, kayaking, and – quite new – climbing. She rather prefers carrying a 30 kg heavy backpack through Alaska than leaving the camera behind. Photography has always been an integral part of her life and for Karin it’s a way to communicate and to show others how beautiful the world is outside their living rooms. With photography, one can address emotions and feelings directly, giving this medium a lot of potential power.

This photo was taken near 11 pm in July. It may have saved my life and the very least my Jeep . The 1/125ths or so of a second it took to push the shutter button was about equal to the amout of time by which I missed hitting a moose a few moments later. There is much traffic once you get away from the city of Anchorage, but there are a lot of scenic vistas.

Photographer: Ronnie Glover (Gig Harbor, WA, USA)
Photography took a backseat while Ronnie obtained his college degree. After graduation, he purchased his first camera but was unable to produce the images that he saw in his mind. He then took a few continuing education class to learn the technical aspects of the camera and realized there was so much more to learn about photography. So Ronnie enrolled in the professional program at Southeastern Center for the Arts in Atlanta. The school was operated by Jeanne & Neil Chaput de Saintonge, who currently operate Rocky Mountain School of Photography. He spent 14 years living in Alaska and this gave him unbelievable opportunities to experience nature and capture many images. Ronnie also enjoy travel photography and the experience of different cultures. It is his wish that his images will expose others to the beauty of nature and other cultures. He invites everyone to enjoy his gallery and feel free to contact him with any comments.

A ice climber takes advantage of the snow melt along the cliffs of Turnagain Arm to practice his craft. Turnagain Arm is one of the most scenic roadways in the United States. Leaving Anchorage and heading south, you can see many stunning mountain and inlet views. You may also see ice climbers or wind surfers depending on the weather. Moose and mountain sheep are also common.

This photo was taken on February 5, 2011, in Kenai, Alaska. Recent solar activity and clear skies prompted me to head to a dark portion of the city, away from light pollution. I stood in -10F (-23 C) in temperatures, watching the aurora borealis (or, the Northern Lights) slowly dance on the northern horizon. Just when I was thinking about packing it up and heading home for the night, the auroral activity began to increase dramatically. Waves of green light began to dance overhead. I shifted my gaze from the North and saw this scene to my West. The aurora almost seemed as if it was interacting with the surroundings, as it appeared to highlight the frosted trees and dip down just above the snowy road.

Photographer: Ryan Marquis ( Kenai, Alaska USA )
Since discovering the potential that a DSLR camera offers, Ryan Marquis has rarely been seen without his camera in-hand. Ryan Marquis’ photography focuses on landscapes and wildlife in its natural habitat. Ryan considers his camera to be an extension of his eyesight and photography as a way to share those views, and enhance his senses of the natural world around him. He lives in Kenai, Alaska which provides easy access to unexploited wilderness and untamed wildlife. The long and cold Alaskan winters offer him the opportunity to photograph the aurora borealis and winter landscapes, while the summers offer nearly 24/7 daylight to capture Alaska’s rich flora and fauna. He augments the photos on his photoblog by writing about the subjects in the image, oftentimes providing scientific and historical context for his subjects. In addition to landscape and wildlife photography, Ryan experiments with time-lapse videos and astrophotography.
This photo was taken on June 6, 2011, overlooking Skilak Lake located on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula. Skilak Lake’s rich blue color owes to the glacial sediment fed into the lake from the Skilak Glacier. Visible in the center of the picture is the gravel delta containing the braided streams of the Skilak River. This delta is an indicator of coarser sediments that have been deposited from Skilak Glacier. The glacier itself has retreated a number of miles into the Harding Ice Field over the past few decades. Skilak Lake is also fed from the Kenai River, renowned worldwide for its salmon fishing. Skilak Lake and the surrounding terrain illustrate a landscape carved by glaciers.
