These are the few of the characters of Bangla. However, the right to speak and write in Bangla had to be earned in a very unprecedented way. The epic story of rise of a nation that they are not afraid to die to protect their language

In the year 1948, the Governor General of Pakistan Mohammed Ali Jinnah came to Dhaka of the then East Pakistan, and decleared Urdu to be the only official language for both West and East Pakistan. From that very moment, people of Bangladesh (then East Pakistan), having Bangla as the mother language started protesting against this.

On 21 February 1952, students called in for a provincial strike, but the government invoked a limited curfew to prevent this and the protests were tamed down so as to not break the curfew. All the people wanted were the right to talk in their own language, the language of their motherland. On the contrary, the Pakistani police fired on the students despite these peaceful protests and Abdus Salam, Rafiq Uddin Ahmed, Abul Barkat, Abdul Jabbar and many were killed.

Bangladesh got independence in 16 December 1971, following a nine month long liberation war where 3 million people were killed in the hand of Pakistani army, one of the biggest genocides in the history that was ever recorded. And November 1999, UNESCO’s declaration of 21st February as the International Mother Language Day has brought fresh glory and prestige to Bangladesh which is making significant strides towards peace, progress and prosperity around the world.

It was quite late at night that I was too eager to expose unfinished roll film negative (Kodak Tri-X 400). So I came up with this random idea. I took the coffee beans that I got from Starbucks Coffee earlier in the week, a small cup, a piece of plain white paper, a torchlight (white light), a metal bar (for holding the torchlight) and a roll (boxed) of unexposed negative Kodak Tri-X 400.

Photographer: Morris Hilarian( Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia )
“Born in North Borneo, Sabah, Malaysia in November 1987, Morris Hilarian grew up in an average family. He furthered his studies in 2006 in Bachelor of Science, majoring in Biochemistry in University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. Later, he graduated in 2009, and joined in government service as a Scientific Officer (Biochemist) in Department of Pathology. He just started photography as a hobby in 2010 with some plastic cameras, and later got serious in Analog Photography and decided to get himself a decent 35mm SLR. His first SLR was Nikon FM2n (that he is still using until today). As he gained more experience in photography, he decided to upgrade himself with medium format camera. So, he got himself a decent Mamiya RB67 Pro S (6×7 format). These 2 gears have been treating him well and these are all what he got now. He started developing his own B&W negatives back in end of the year 2010. He started off with DIY home made developer which was Caffenol-C (a mix of coffee crystals, sodium carbonate and traces of vitamin C). One can easily get details about it online. He later got serious (again) and bought himself his very first commercial developer Kodak HC-110, of which he is still using until today. In a month or soon, he will get himself a darkroom enlarger as he would take this hobby more seriously and want to do darkroom printing.
His experience in photography is still limited but he does explore new things and experience. Most of the time he goes out shooting during weekends with his friends and sometimes he does it all alone. Morris believes practice makes perfect and that experience will never can be bought.”
This is an elevator call panel from Michigan Central Station – arguably the most famous urban ruin in Detroit. Time and taggers have taken their toll on this beautiful building. Here, the setting sun was reflecting onto this surface, hghlighting the amazing colors that you see here. There was very little retouching – these colors are truly this vibrant in real life. What I really appreciated about this scene was the layers present. To the left and right of the panel are the rusted, heavy metal elevator doors now missing their glass and looking straight to the back of the elevator shaft.

Chris Horner is a freelance photographer based in Charlotte, North Carolina USA. Chris started becoming serious about photography about four years ago. His main topic of interest is in capturing urban scenes. Chris started primarily with this theme, and then carried his photography skills into another area that he loves – vehicles and racing. Others began taking notice of his work through what he shared on the web and in person. Soon he was creating fine art prints for people to enjoy in their homes and offices. That in turn got the attention of some local small business owners, who started requesting Chris to create images they could use in their marketing. Chris is looking to grow his commercial business since he has always enjoyed working with other entrepreneurs and helping business owners find success in their endeavors.
It was the fall of 2010, late October; the streets in London were beautifully covered of Maple leaves, wonderful to my eyes, because I never get to see that type of tree or leaf, living in the desert in northern Mexico. I figured that probably for the people living in London, these type of sight isn´t good, they think of it as garbage ruining their streets and cleanness of the city, but to me, it was special, different from anything else I´d seen. I captured it, trying to capture the essence of the atmosphere of that time of year in the UK.

The holes of the wall were stuffed with many items and I found them to be interesting to shoot. The lizard too wanted to be a part of the frame.

This photograph was taken in my girlfriends parents house, parts of which have not been touched for over twenty years. The peeling walls, cobwebs and random personal belongings all combined to produce an image which gave an insight into the eccentric Victorian nature of her family. In May of this year we, as the Drugstore Gallery are going to have an Art exhibition in the house for more details please visit our website.

Photographer: Barry Cawston (Axbridge Somerset, UK)
Barry Cawston is a freelance photographer with a client list that includes English Heritage, The Guardian & The Sunday Telegraph. He also runs The Drugstore Gallery with my partner Soraya Schofield which showcases our work and eight other photographers. We have taken the gallery to the Affordable Art Fairs in Bristol, London & Paris and hope to exhibit at the New York AAF in 2012. He has won several awards for his photography Including The South West Art Award in 2011, the British Journal of Photography, Nikon Endframe Award. He has being featured in a TV art program called “‘Show Me the Monet” this May. He has recently had two solo shows in London, one at Capital Culture In Covent Garden and the other at Sarah Myerscough Fine Art in Mayfair ( who now represents me). He is hoping to do the Trans -Siberian Railway this summer for a show at Sarah Myerscough and in an art centre in St Petersbugh next year.
Barry’s work is quite varied but largely shot on a large format field camera and printed by himself in a traditional colour darkroom set up in the gallery. He trys and bring out the emotional element of an image in the print and often enlarge the prints to one or two meters.

Photographer: Kelven Ng (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada)
As an accountant, getting off the desk and the chair is always a luxury. Excel spreadsheets are only so interesting so taking a photo of just about anything is a bit of a relief. Kelven is lucky however to live in Vancouver, Canada since it gives him so much to take photos of and so many different perspectives to see. Kelven is even luckier now to be living in London, England and to be traveling Europe. In no way is he a professional photographer but he hopes his skills let him capture the memories of every day life and his travels.
