This photograph was taken at Lepchakha, Duars, West Bengal. We went to Lepchakha for photographing Losar Festival. Reaching there we decided to photograph the local villages. There I saw this girl, peeping to our activity with curiosity through the door. Suddenly I capture her with this expression. Later I confirmed her name is ”Sonam” from her Mother.

There is a small forest village near my home town where I visit often. One day I saw this little boy who was lying on wooden bench, and were very sad, when I asked him what happened he didn’t reply, suddenly his grandmother told me that his mother went for work and he is waiting for her like everyday. I saw his eyes how much he was missing his mother. My one click may be gave him some excitement for that moment.

Taken with a Nikon D70 and 70-300mm lens, providing the lovely shallow depth of field and isolating the subject from the background. The arbitrary crop draws you into the subjects eyes, which are the main focus in the image going beyond recording likenesses and resulting in a sense of immediacy and sincerity.

Keith Riley fell in love with photography after embarking on a Photography A level course to aid his composition as a graphic designer. It was a turning point in his career, which resulted in a BA (Hons) in Photography. He started his photography career with a Nikon D70 and now he mostly uses a Nikon D700 with a Nikkor 50mm f1.4D AF, Nikkor 35mm f/1.4G AF-S and Nikkor 28-300mm f/35-5.6G ED VR lens.

His goal is to be as creative as possible towards anything he does. He is inspired by art in general and whether he is photographing weddings, fashion or portraits he is always on the lookout for a different take on an image and aspiring to learn new techniques. He has a genuine interest in people and people’s faces and strives to capture that perfect moment infused with soul, motion, and emotion.

The portrait of this old man is an example of those, who totally got deviated from Islam. This old man was attending in an annual ritual at the shrine of a local saint. If you ask them, they will say, “we only coming to the shrine of holy person, so that they may bring us closer to Allah.” Quran mentioned these people, and even says what they will say – “We only worship them so that they may bring us closer to Allah.” ( Chapter 39:3). This is an act of Shirk, which Quran mentioning it clearly, “Most of them claim belief in Allah, while committing shirk.” ( Chapter 12: 106).

These people are not only ignorant, but also committing the highest form of sin. Ibn Mas‘oud reported that the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) said, “The most evil of mankind are those who will be alive when the Last Day arrives, and those who take graves as places of worship.” Jundub ibn ‘Abdillaah reported that five days before the Prophet’s Mohammad (PBUH) death he heard him say, “Those before you took the graves of their prophets as places of worship. Do not take graves as places of worship for verily I forbid you to do so.” (Sahih Muslim, Vol.1, no 1083)

Looking at the photograph, you can also notice, the old man is so far away from the teaching of Islam, that he was intoxicated himself with marijuana and tobacco. Though the photograph was taken in Lahore, Pakistan, but this is a very common scene also in India, and other South Asian countries. Being ignorant, a vast number of people form the West, think this as part of religion, where as ornate tombs and decorated graves, along with festivals of commemoration and adoration has led to great misguidance in religion.
