I came across this young girl and her older sister paddling in a dugout boat and thought they would make interesting subjects. It was only when we got closer that I noticed the younger girl was holding a capybara as if it was her toy.

This little 2-year-old girl looked at me today, while taking her picture. Her stare was so strong, it made me feel bonded to her somehow, made me imagine how one of her days must be. There was so much light and mystery in those eyes.

The picture was made in December 2012 during my Laos trip, on the way from Phonsavan to Luang Prabang. The girl was spotted by the side of the road in a small village.
