Looking back to his early childhood, there already exist pictures of him with an old photo camera. After he finished college with specialization in technical computer science, he started working as a web developer. That is when His grandfather gave him his old Canon EOS D30, which is Stefan’s first DSLR in the year 2007. It was him who awoke his interests in photography and it’s because of him that his biggest hobby is now photography. As one can imagines, as student you do not have much money, so it took a while after he bought his first DSLR, the EOS D50. In the meanwhile he borrowed the equipment of his grandfather, and learned a lot of things in photography. He likes challenges and exploring something new, which helped him won Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photo Walk in Linz (Austria) in the year 2009. In the year 2012 he got self-employed with a web agency and IT company, and started studying informatics in Linz to improve his technical understanding. Taking pictures means something special to him. When he takes his camera he feels free! There is no pressure; it’s just him and his camera.

Website: http://www.stth.at
Photo Portfilio: http://photography.stth.at/
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stefanthallner
500px: http://500px.com/stth

The post Through the Night, by Stefan Thallner appeared first on Light & Composition.

Dubai At Night, by Bashar Alaeddin

Contestant | April '13

Night Photography

Bashar Alaeddin

Dubai

United Arab Emirates

I had just bought the new Canon 5D Mark III in Dubai after finishing a fashion-shoot. I was lucky to be accommodated at a friends apartment in Jumeirah Lake Towers with this image as the view from their balcony. I placed the camera on my tripod on the balcony and captured this image. I wanted to see how good it really was in low-light. This was, I believe, one of the very first images I took when I ripped the packaging apart excitedly. With that, I framed with the images as so to showcase the contrast of high-rise towers on the left with the open space of the city on the right. Dubai is a beautiful city to photograph at night if your fortunate enough to be high-up to see the glittering lights all over.

Technical Info: Canon 5D Mark III with 24mm f/1.4L | Exposure 30sec @ f/11 | ISO 160 | 100mm
Award Winner: Photo of the Day | April 23
Award Score: 67 (Value 13, Clarity 12, Composition 17, Style 12, Skill 13)

Title of the photograph: Dubai At Night
Photo of the Day Award Category: Night Photography
Photograph Location: Jumeirah Lake Towers, Dubai | United Arab Emirates

Photographer: Bashar Alaeddin (Amman, Jordan) Registered Photographer
Born in Kuwait City, lived between Jordan and Lebanon most of his life, Bashar has over 9yrs experience in digital photography since he picked it up as a hobby for a course during his university years. His first roll was Kodacolor, and when he developed it he was astonished. No image! Later he got opportunity to work with a Swiss French newspaper, but practicing press photography become too depressing for him because the majority of the events to cover were tragic. He graduated from the military aviation academy (avionics engineer), and later on, from MBA school (IBR school, based in Ukraine). While majority of his professional career was with information technology, where he worked for such companies as American Power Conversion, hp, Microsoft, and now working with Apple as director of Apple VAD in Ukraine, but photography is his greatest passion and hobby.

Sergiy’s first experience was with his grandfather’s camera (made in 1936), and while he was studying in school he started mode in-depth learning of photography, including dark room processing, shooting on color films, etc. His first own camera (shared with his sister) was Smena-8M, which was very popular in Soviet Union as basic and very affordable camera for children. In upper class his mother gave him a gift – Zenit-12SD, which was his first real film DSLR and he enjoyed it for many years. Later on, while being on business trip in Canada, he bought Minolta with set of lenses, which was far more advanced one. Large part of his film photo collection was made with it. Sergiy was quite skeptical towards digital photography at the beginning, and switched completely to digital workflow by late 90’s until early 2000. About 7 years ago he graduated from the professional photography course in the Kyiv School of Photography, and later on, continued to study (distance learning course of professional photography) in New York Institute of Photography. He also attended number of training courses in different other schools and on top of it, learn new interesting areas online. He did his first photo exhibition in April, 2011, which was named “Sikkim. Beginning” and was devoted to his trekking in Himalaya, Sikkim, India, in 2010.

Sergiy’s favorite type of photography is travel and landscape; however he likes reportage as well. He does devote significant portion of his time to internal growth and development, which to his strong opinion, is the most important part of any creative human. He is trying to use photography as means to share his deep love to the world, to other people and nature, and pass warmth of his heart to them.

Website: http://www.serge-photo.com
Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/skadulin/
Gallery: http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/gallery/1414006/
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Sergiy.Kadulin
Twitter: https://twitter.com/skadulin

The post Downtown of Las Vegas at Night, by Sergiy Kadulin appeared first on Light & Composition.

The New Tokyo Station, by Madoka Hori

Contestant | March '13

Night Photography

Japan

Madoka Hori

Tokyo

Till last October, even if you had a chance to visit Tokyo station, there was a big restoration project going on and you couldn’t see the beautiful brick building for 5 years. This building was originally constructed even before my 91-year-old grandmother was born! A few days before the grand opening in 2012, I had a business meeting in Tokyo, 3 hours away from my hometown. Right after the meeting, I went up to the restaurant floor of Shin-Marunouchi Building which stands across from the Tokyo station. I went outside on a balcony where a few couples were having romantic dinner and I put my Olympus on the edge of the handrail to capture this beautiful night view. My favorite part is the color of the bricks and the warm light in the center of the fast paced Asian metropolis.

Technical Info: OLYMPUS E-P2 | Exposure 1/2 @ f/3.5 | Focal Length 14mm | ISO 200
Award Winner: Photo of the Day | March 30
Award Score: 65 (Value 12, Clarity 12, Composition 17, Style 12, Skill 12)

Title of the photograph: The New Tokyo Station
Photo of the Day Award Category: Night Photography
Photograph Location: Tokyo | Japan

Photographer: Madoka Hori (Ashiya, Japan) Guest Photographer
Madoka Hori’s first camera was a toy she got in Singapore when she was on a family trip at age 4. She could press shutter release button, use flash, change filters to see the world differently and it amazed her. She knew it could be fun to hold a (real) camera someday rather than just being the subject of her father’s photography all the time. She started to take photos during high school and after she shifted to digital when she was 20, it got a lot easier for her to capture the moment she wanted to remember. Now she primarily uses Olympus Pen E-P2 and occasionally experiments with her father’s NIKON D800.
