He lives in a small village in Upper Lusatia surrounded by wonderful nature. He is currently working as a design engineer, specialist for occupational safety and environmental officer. Over time, photography has become an important part-time of his employment. Lothar Seifert’s journeys in Asia, his friendly relations with the people of various religions in Nepal, Kashmir, Ladakh and India, has learned him to love the road and portrait photography. The motivating impulses from these Asian countries are limitless. Lothar’s pictures from Asia shows also solidarity with the poor people on earth. For three years he organized support for the schooling of children from poor families in Nepal and sends winter clothing for children in the cold regions of the Himalayas. By these experiences and adventures Lothar gets incidentally wonderful motifs for photography.

The invitation of the Secretary of State for Culture and Tourism of Jammu and Kashmir brought Lothar in 2009 for the second time on a photo safari in the beautiful countries Kashmir and Ladakh. The most important photo for Lothar is not by himself, but by the photographers by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala. This picture shows His Holiness together with Lothar Seifert and a friend. In addition, Lothar likes the faces of little insects and makes many macro shots of the animals and plants. With his photographs and conservation projects he wants to help to understand the nature and to save the environment.

Website: http://www.l-seifert.de/
Portfolio: http://www.asien.l-seifert.de/
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/lothar.seifert
Google +: https://plus.google.com/114297295030668699918/
Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/selo/
Twitter: https://twitter.com/l_seifert

The post Farmers in Nepal, by Lothar Seifert appeared first on Light & Composition.

Fishing in the Forest, by Rahat Azim Chowdhury

Contestant | May '13

Documentary Photography

Bangladesh

Habiganj

Rahat Azim Chowdhury

Rema Kalenga Wildlife Sanctuary

Sylhet

The Rema-Kalenga wildlife sanctuary is a part of the trap hill reserved forest, the largest remnant of upland natural forest in the country. He is an Electrical Power Engineer and completed his BSc in EEE from Bangladesh and MSc from London. He was in band music from his early days until 2008 then suddenly left professional music for his better study life. From his childhood he loves to take pictures of nature and people around him, but honestly it was not his infatuation. Photography becomes his passion when he inspired a lot by his wife around a year ago. He believes self-learning is the best learning so that he started learning photography by the help of e-books, online articles, video tutorials and observing seniors’ works. His friends and cousins helped him a lot for a quick start with his 1st DSLR camera. After 5 months he completed his 1st photographic course in Photojournalism. Recently he has done an advance course in basic photography and now started a one diploma course in professional photography. He feels affection for taking photos of different aspects of human life and nature. Nature, wild life, architectural, street photography and candid portraiture are his specialty. Shanji also loves to do wedding photography barely from an artistic vision just not only for earning money. Creating own signature in photos is Nazmul Shanji’s main awareness where he always try to put his own styles, knowledge and views. “I love to travel a lot and try to capture the moments of life. His formative years were spent daydreaming about art, politics and sports under the cusp of a military dictatorship. He moved to the wilderness of the American prairies and western Canada for his university education, and eventually wound his way to Harvard. In between all this tiptoeing, rapidly developing wanderlust, he began to research and write on genocide, gender equity, war theory, and liberalism. During his PhD research and fieldwork, he found an outlet in photography.

Omi’s photography exhibits the equipoise between space and human identity. Most of his photographs were taken at various warzones and dictatorships, from Somalia to Burma. Instead of replicating and imitating the dire conditions that are part and parcel of human existence within these warzones, Chowdhury’s photography captures the levity, beauty, and randomness of people’s lives in these places. It is ultimately an homage to undying human spirit that refuses to wither even in the most desperate of circumstances. He has also ventured into the world of fashion photography and has photographed ballerinas, yogis and fashion models for various spreads and sub-shoots. Omi has had three solo shows in Berlin, Boston and Ann Arbor, respectively. His work has been featured in Light and Composition Magazine, LAT, Vogue Italia and in galleries in Chicago, Indianapolis, Prague, Munich and Abu Dhabi. Omi will also be doing an installment for the Smithsonian in Dec 2013.

Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/photographyomi
Google+: https://plus.google.com/100275867577525372903

The post Inception, by Jyoti Omi Chowdhury appeared first on Light & Composition.

A Morning with Solidity, by Nazmul Shanji

Contestant | March '13

Documentary Photography

Bangladesh

Nazmul Shanji

Sylhet

On the way to Ratargul forest, Sylhet we are waiting for a boat to pass the river and found this stunning moment. If you trace back its history, you’ll know the blood that Bangladeshis paid for earning the right to talk in their mother language. 61 years have passed since Bangladesh’s language movement of 1952, but still the war criminals of 1971, the Liberation War of the country are not brought into justice. Now, in 2013, a spontaneous and peaceful mass movement has spread all over the country asking for capital punishment of the war criminals. Here in the photograph, a young freedom fighter of the new generation is captured lighting candles in the memory of the martyrs of the language movement, as if symbolizing the on going war for justice, handed down from one generation to another.

Technical Info: Canon Eos Kiss X4 | Exposure f/2.5 @ 1/60sec | Focal length 30mm | ISO 800
Award Winner: Photo of the Day | February 21
Award Score: 68 (Value 12, Clarity 12, Composition 18, Style 12.5, Skill 13.5)

Title of the photograph: And the War Goes On
Photo of the Day Award Category: Documentary Photography
Photograph Location: Dhaka | Bangladesh

Photographer: Shahnaz Parvin (Dhaka, Bangladesh) Registered Photographer
Shahnaz Parvin is a passionate Bangalee, who resides in Bangladesh. The nation is going through a spontaneous mass protest demanding capital punishment for the war criminals of the country. Here people of all age, as well as the children of the freedom fighters are signing in demand of the capital punishment for the recognized war criminal Abdul Quader Molla. He has been found guilty of large-scale massacres in the Mirpur area of Dhaka during the country’s Liberation War in 1971. Five out of six charges against him are proven, but still he did not get the highest punishment according to the nation’s law. So the protest continues, transforming into a revolution throughout the nation. Now the nation awaits justice, and also to rewrite its deserving fate through the hands of its new generation.

Technical Info: Canon Eos Kiss X4 | Exposure f/3.5 @ 1/80sec | Focal length 30mm | ISO 6400
Award Winner: Photo of the Day | February 09
Award Score: 66 (Value 12, Clarity 12, Composition 16.5, Style 12, Skill 13.5)

Title of the photograph: The Sign of Change
Photo of the Day Award Category: Documentary Photography
Photograph Location: Shahbagh, Dhaka | Bangladesh

Photographer: Shahnaz Parvin (Dhaka, Bangladesh) Registered Photographer
Shahnaz Parvin is a passionate Bangalee, who resides in Bangladesh.
