She has always been interested in human behavior and that’s where her interest was born, taking inspiration from artists like Diane Arbus especially, but she also found that she had a unique way of viewing composition and framing and her work began to grow in more directions than just photographing people. Currently, she resides in New York City where the life and styles of the city inspire and influence her work.

Jessica went to Rochester Institute of Technology for her first two years of college. At RIT she majored in fine arts photography, however, the structured approach and stale environment of that university did not suit her. She put off so much by the experience, in fact, that she took a different turn in her career path altogether and made photography her hobby in order to maintain her love for it. Now, living in New York City, she allows inspiration to feed her everyday experiences and she is so happy to be able to share them with as many people as she can.

Website: http://jessicaandsadie.tumblr.com/
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/jessicameigershen
Twitter: https://twitter.com/meibelle7

The post Between Tones, by Jessica Gershen appeared first on Light & Composition.

Standing Tall, by Shirren Lim

Architectural Photography

Contestant | January '13

Bhutan

Shirren Lim

Thimphu

I shot this while visiting the Trashichho Dzong, the main Government Secretariat in Thimphu, Bhutan. She is now based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Shirren took up photography in 2009, as she thought it would be an interesting habit, later she discovered it as her true passion. Shirren loves portraitures best. To her, the expressions people wear are so beautiful, so telling, so uncovered in their sincerity. With her photo-taking, she tries and does justice to capture humanity in its many forms. Shirren’s work has been described as intense and earthy with her simple composition cutting to the heart of the subject matter. As a child, she had flipped through many of her father’s National Geographic magazines, but it was Steve McCurry’s 1984 “Afghan Girl” that she recall two decades later. That is what she wants to do with her life. She believes, someday, she can able to capture that one moment that could change the world. Her work has appeared in several web and printed magazines.

Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/shirrenlim/
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/shirrenlim
Twitter: https://twitter.com/ShirrenLim
Google Plus: https://plus.google.com/u/0/112912440438084031232/posts

The post Standing Tall, by Shirren Lim appeared first on Light & Composition.

Beyond Lines, by Andrea Migliari

Architectural Photography

Contestant | January '13

Andrea Migliari

Brescia

Italy

This image has been taken in the old Castle of Brescia. He left school at 17 to start his working life as a junior carpenter and after a while he decided to take a gap year in London. In the English capital he used to work in many different places while studying English in the London West Collage. Now he is living in Italy, close to Bergamo where he works for a rental car company.

Since he was a teenager he used to take pictures of everything he came across; the beauty of the lake and the marvelous places in the area of Verbano made him become a passionate photographer. He started using a film camera and learning dark room processing in black and white, and then finally moved to digital in 2009 when he bought his first Canon 50D. He attended various photography workshop and post-processing courses that made him developed a particular workflow from the raw capture to the final image. He loves taking picture of everything he likes, from landscapes to portraits and live music event. Some of his pictures were published in a prestigious Italian art magazine Overart. He won the photography competition contest of “Passione Italia” in 2011 with the photo “Quando la città dorme” that was used as a cover image for the White Pages of the Bergamo area. He tries to share his love for photography and visual art through his images, knowing that the beauty may be found just across the street corner.

Website: http://www.andreamigliari.com
Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/migliariandrea/
Twitter: https://twitter.com/MigliariAndrea

The post Beyond Lines, by Andrea Migliari appeared first on Light & Composition.

To the Sea, by Sébastien Beun

Architectural Photography

Contestant | December '12

Malta

Sébastien Beun

Valletta

This image shows a very small part of the Fort Saint Elmo of Valletta, Malta, that is situated on the seaward shore of the Peninsula of the city. It was originally just a watchtower that was reinforced since 1533 due to its strategic position, protecting the city of Valletta as well as the entrance to both the Marsamxett Harbour and Grand Harbour. Due to its strategic position again, it was the scene of several of most important battles of the 1565′s Ottoman siege of Malta, when the Ottomans invaded the island that was at that time held by the Knights of Saint John.

The post Symmetry, by Shirren Lim appeared first on Light & Composition.

Le Persiane, by Sébastien Beun

Architectural Photography

Contestant | December '12

San Gimignano.
